Seniors Looking for Convenience Shopping

Get Out of My Way

Get Out of My Way

We seniors might enjoy shopping but Black Friday is NOT the day to be walking through the malls for exercise.  I for one never wanted to battle the bargain hunters.  Even the parking lot is cause for concern as the shoppers get in a hurry and bang into cars, leave the carts sitting where I can hit them.  So here’s a great solution, just go on line.  We seniors know how to use our computers to our advantage.  We can do comparison shopping, yell at the dog, cut up our cards when we hit the limit and keep our car from getting dings in the mall shopping lot.

So Panda Lady says:  ”Don’t spend Black Friday jostling for bargains and parking spots. Instead, visit Amazon.com for Black Friday specials and great deals all week long from the convenience (and comfort) of your keyboard. Visit every day as new bargains will be posted now, YES NOW through  Dec. 4.Make yourself a cup of coffee, park here, and have a happy carefree shopping day.

Panda Lady found some monthly  specials for you at Mountain Rose Herbs. There is time to make your own gifts, so snoop around the site, for gift packs, wrappings, bottles for your special herbs.  Don’t forget the convenience of on line gift cards.

Seniors Learning to Use the Internet

“A new Harris Poll finds  Babyboomers online are beginning to look more like the population of the country. Although senior citizens age 65 and older still lag, they are catching up and the difference is not so dramatic”, says  Senior Journal.com.  They go on to explain that we seniors are 16% of the population  but only 10% of the on line users.   Considering that at the top of age scale 80-100 most will never start to use the computer because of impairment and thus the elderly  participation  on the net is at a maximum level.  But we are catching up and probably have maxed out as 18 million of us seniors were using the net in 1997 but now a whopping 184 million adults are computers users.

The time to learn most things is 10 years ago
-Mignon McLaughlin

I came on line in 2004 so you see I was a little slow getting here.  I also was a little slow grasping all there wass to learn  often excusing myself as “computer illiterate” or that I did not speak “computer–eeze”.  Because many of us are still quite new to the cyber age, I thought some resources might be good for those new to the net and those who have been learning  and struggling for some time.

LOCAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

If you are a hands on person, you will be learning as you go.  When we get stuck we just ask our grandchildren. Sometimes we find classes at the Senior Citizens Center, community colleges/universities, work on the job training, neighbors/friends, church or  other organizations offering classes. Ford Motor company in our community offered many kinds of classes for enriched lifestyle so computers classes were included as an option.  You might be familiar with Elderhostel who provide learning adventures for those over 55. You might find computers on the list of adventures at your local colleges or investigate their site at: http://www.elderhostel.org/about/default.aspSeniorNet also has learning centers thru out the country.  On the menu check out the over 200 choices for your area learning centers.

ON LINE LEARNING

You can worK with AARP.org and their 7  basic web lessons.

Another self help site is: http://ricshe8.freehostia.com/seniors/computing2.html which was developed by college professor, Rick Sheridan. Check out his  many resources.

While looking around in Wired Seniors aka Senior Search, I found a lady who has on line classes which she sends each month.  She also sells how to books, she has created. I have yet to receive my first lesson so I will update this information when I get into the lessons.

Here is a Series of books for seniors using the internet located at: http://www.visualsteps.com/. These are great for the visual learner as they provide a screen shot and illustration for step by step instructions..

Internet for Beginners by About.com has 39 areas of learning offered right on line. Click on any of the subjects to learn more.

Seniors Learning about the Internet

Learning Made Easy

Panda picked learning the computer as today’s subject because we never stop learning.  There is always another new skill, a new method, computer terms, a shortcut etc. Whether you seek advice on skype or yahoo from friends, read books or attend classes we seniors can be successful in our quest for learning about the computer. With these skills we have access to all the computer can  add to our lifestyle.

Seniors Seek Happy Heart Foods

Seniors love to use the internet to research subjects.  It saves a trip to the library, saves gas, and the internet is easy reading.  While checking out  information on one of the leading causes of death, heart disease.  I came across a nice magazine article in Lifescript.beta, written by Carly Young, where she lists 10 foods which give us healthy happy hearts.

check these for happy hearts

check these for happy hearts

The list is:  Oatmeal, almonds, flax-seeds, garlic, apples, beans, soy protein, psyllium husk or hulls and exercise.

I set out to see how much I could include in my breakfast yesterday.  My hot oatmeal – was what I was planning.  A chopped apple with the skins still on, some nuts, psyllium hulls, unprocessed wheat bran made quite a combination using 5 of the 10 items on their list.

If you read their 10 foods list, you will find ways to sneak the items into your diet.  So now all we need to do is to get those happy feet going for a nice long walk.

While doing the research to find the best heart foods, I came across the American Heart Association web site which gives us another neat way to use the internet.  They have directions for making your happy  heart shopping list. Their site teaches us another new skill, internet meal planning.

Panda Lady searched for the best products that we could find to help not only seniors, but all people  who use Psyllium, flaxseed and oatmeal.  Our top recommendations are:
flaxseed products

Oatmeal Bread

Seniors Lured in by Scams

The latest scam which is quite prevelant  here in Northwest Ohio, is the caller who claims to be a relative stranded in Canada.  Supposedly they are being detained  and need money for fines and transportation home.  Funds should be sent via wire transfer, Western Union or MoneyGram.  Our Better Business Bureau has been contacted by many reporting this scam.

This scam can be carried out because your name, address, ages  children, phone   are listed on people search sites.  We seniors can become frustrated when we hear a youngster is in trouble and we want to resucue.  Never mind that we don’t recognize the voice.  With our families so scattered we may not have heard the voice of our grandchildren for a long time.

Radio and Television are getting the scam information out here in our area.  You might alert others in your area as  to this scam  as it is growing rapidly so  a representative of our Better Buseau told me  The Better

Is there a “For Sale Sign” in your yard.  These scammers are not targeting the elderly who can’t defend themselves, they are appealing to the desperate who are having trouble selling there homes.

Go here to read  the descriptions of scam offers to help sell your house.  http://blogs.byownermls.com/2008/11/avoiding-common-homeowner-scams.html

While on line we have to have our defenses up.  This week, a nice skype chat turned into a blunt statement “Send me more than $150 US dollars”.  The nice thing about skype is that you just don’t respond.  Likewise, as we advertise our business ventures on line by giving out our e-mail address, we become the recipient of scam letters.  You know the one who is sick, father has died and left money in London.  Not original is it? I just learned that there is a place to report these incidents. Facebook has been hit with a Nigerian type scam where the person claims to be your on line friend stranded in another country. This involves high jacking your on line account. Mail on line.com. reports the latest on line scam.

Seniors are the Largest Group of Consumers

We seniors are creatures of habit.  Once we find good service, just  like anyone else we tend to return. Today I took my car for an oil and filter change.  Anybody who is a decent mechanic could do that, right?  It’s not about who can change my oil but who services my car. We seniors look for quality as much as affordable service.

As I entered the dealership I was greeted by a friendly person, ready to write up my order for the overdue oil exchange.  A typical well groomed service area awaited my car. I was sent to a waiting area to have a cup of coffee and a donut.

Nothing too unusual you might say. But there is a difference when one considers the word “loyalty” acted out.

Here’s how it played out.

The car salesman who sold me the car came by to greet me.  The conversation centered on my daughter because he was concerned with her struggle of an addiction which he too had conquered.  We connected.  I remarked that the coffee was nice but why didn’t tea  drinkers have their drink of choice?  He said he would get one for me.  We connected.  The owner of the dealership came by and asked another lady how her Explorer was doing? Wow he knew what car he had sold her some time ago. She marveled at his memory. They connected. I teased him about the lack tea and told him I understood that he was a tea drinker.  Within minutes a receptionist came by with hot water and choice of tea bags.  We connected.

The salesman never  suggested my buying  a car.  The owner never questioned the lady if she were there to buy a car.  So what were they selling?  They were selling themselves and their good service. They were sealing our loyalty.  If they saw a need, they were ready to accommodate.

People do not have to be sold.  Your customers should seek you out knowing that you have their best interest at heart. If  you present yourself as the answer to their needs, you have sealed their loyalty. There is no need to hound your friends and neighbors to make a sale. Let them come to you, as you have what they want or need.

So why would I travel clear across town to have my oil changed?  Service is the answer. Loyalty and commitment acted out in a dealership where the owner has such passion about his product that he knows every car on his lot, so the salesman tells me.

Panda Picked this story to remind you that you are not doing an internet business to sell anything.  You are in business to provide a service or product which someone wants and needs. With quality service, you will have their loyalty whether to re-order or recommend some other person to you and your business.

Panda Picked Baby Boomers.com as a good resource to add to your connections on the net.

Senior Wellness with Glucosamine-Chondroitin

As we seniors age a little known change takes place in our body. The compound known as glucosamines made naturally in our body from glucose (sugar) and amino acid glutamine (protein, brain and muscle food) is needed to produce glycosaminoglycan, a molecule used in the formation and repair of cartilage and other body tissue. However as we age, like so many other processes, we produce less and less glucosamine affecting the elasticity in our knees and producing bony additions to our fingers and toes.

We can augment our glucosamine production by taking a dietary supplement made from the skeletons of crustacean (shell fish creatures) , arthropods, or cell walls in fungi to replenish the dwindling supply of glucosamine . It is widely used for osteoarthritis, particularly knee osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, cartilage–the rubbery material that cushions joints becomes still and loses its elasticity. That means we are prone to damage and suffer with pain, swelling, loss of movement and further deterioration.

USES

Glucosamine is also found in sports drinks and cosmetics. Glucosamine is often combined with chondroitin (cow cartilage) as we produce less of that too. In the US these are not approved by the the Food and Drug Administration. In Europe it is considered helpful as a medicine. Even animals use the dietary supplement for stiff and swollen joints. Because glusosamine is important to healthy skin, glusosamine plays a major role in the healing of surgical incisions and skin wounds. Some take glucosamine before and after surgery for healing of the skin resulting in less scaring. Wound dressings have been developed using a modified form of glucosamine. Studies are under way considering the effects of glucosamine for treating inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s Disease.

Although widely used by us seniors, no one has proven the effectiveness of glucosamine. You can read about some of the studies on Wikipedia. Because the studies used different forms of glucosamine there is no conclusive evidence from data gathered, participants were not consistent in providing evidence.. All I can say is I feel better having less joint pain so for me the evidence is in.

Disclaimer: When glucosamine was Googled I found 5 million 100 thousand entries. To lighten your load of reading up on the subject I read through a few of the entries. Many are medical statements which you and I don’t follow to well. I hope this summary gives you an idea of what you are putting in your mouth when you take glucosamine chondroitin sulfate. The safety and effectiveness have not been proven. Some of our conditions are potentially serious and we should always consult with a qualified health care provider. The statements made here are not medical fact and I do not claim to be a health care provider. Make yourself knowledgeable and use all dietary supplements with discretion.

Disclaimer given by Mayo Clinic—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not strictly regulate herbs and supplements. There is no guarantee of strength, purity or safety of products, and effects may vary. You should always read product labels. If you have a medical condition, or are taking other drugs, herbs, or supplements, you should speak with a qualified healthcare provider before starting a new therapy. Consult a health-care provider immediately if you experience side effects.

Panda Picked Glucosamine as a word we hear, used as dietary supplements but most of us have no clue as to what gluicosamine is.  This is written from the view point of a layperson with no pretense of knowing all the medical jargon.  I didn’t even know I had ever produced it let alone stopped making it. Here’s to your health and well being.

Safety Tips Seniors On Line

As  seniors we often become victims as we are home, available, believing and trusting.  On line  internet as well as telephone scams are on the rise and we tend to be the victims.  I want to share several scam practices that are going on right now based on police reports as well as my personal experience.

Nov. 11, State Police in Pennsylvania  now report a scam  involving our willingness to co-operate.  The automated phone message asks us to change the pin number to our bank accounts.  When the old pin # is received along with other information, the thiefs have access to banking accounts.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:  recoup the phone number using *69.  Notify local authorities. Call your bank.  Keep track of your account daily  via the internet, watching for any discrepancies.

ON GOING SCAM- This one preys on our wanting to be good citizens.  The caller is warning that we missed  jury duty.  However, they can make it right so that we don’t get in further trouble.  They then want to verify information so that they can eliminate the need for our being punished for our neglect.  They will repeat things like your name, address, phone number asking you to verify.  Now they have you on a role answering questions and agreeing.  “Now what is your social security” they might say “We need to verify that you indeed are Mrs. XXX”.   Your mind is still back on , when was I notified to be on jury duty, what will they do to me for my neglect, etc. You know the rest of the story, you have just been scammed.

A common scam for  on line internet users is to receive a notice that you have just won the lottery. You will receive a notice that you have so many days to claim and here is the contact information.  I received such notices for several months saying I had won the British Lottery.  The notice included lottery numbers they were trying to match to people and of course the number assigned to me was on the list.  I notified the FBI, calling the local number in our community phone book.

I have experienced two on line scams where the e-mail looked very official, with proper stationery headings.  One was for pay pal and the other was for my bank.  Both notices told me to go to a certain url and fill in the information to verify my account as they suspected  a problem with my account.  I contacted pay pal and they told me “WE NEVER ASK FOR YOUR INFORMATION”.  On the bank request they told me they would NEVER send a notice but would contact me in person and ask  me to come in if there were a problem with my account.

When in doubt, always contact the instituion and verify that indeed they were the sender of the information. This is another tactic I find affective.  Thank them and tell them you can’t talk right now but you will get back with them.  Ask for their phone number.

Panda Picked the subject of phone and on line scams because we seniors are the greatest victims of such cimes.   On line scams and phone scams prey on our  fear, lack of understanding, our willingness to please and  our desire to be honest.

Seniors Love Gift Cards

We seniors love receiving and giving gift cards when it comes to gift giving.  Much like the younger people, we find it takes the hassle out of gift giving.  If our children and grandchildren live in another part of the country, we have trouble finding clothing that fits, mailing packages can be inconvenient, we don’t really know the likes and dislikes of those living so far from us and we avoid causing people the hassle of returns or exchanges.

We are not alone in this new phenomenon of using gift cards.  Angie’s List, the nation’s leading consumer ratings service, reports that consumers bought more than $25 billion worth of gift cards over the holiday season. From a nationwide consumer survey they reported that 1/4 of all gifts will be gift cards.

Perhaps this year because of economic conditions, our gift cards may be buying more practical gifts such as gas, winter boots and gloves, groceries,  dinner and entertainment.

With the use of gift card giving goes a warning.  Did you know that scam artists have learned to copy down the numbers of gift cards while displayed in stores?  They then check on balances and quickly charge against the card on line.

SOLUTION:  Buy cards that are stored behind the counter and not out on open racks.

Another issue is the fear of a business place going backrupt before the card is redemed. According to the poll from Angie’s List 17 percent of all people having problems redeeming their card was because of bankruptcy.

SOLUTION: Know that the company is solid. Redeem cards ASAP. Believe it or not some of us seniors are still carring cards for a year or so according to the survey.

Panda Picked Gift Giving Cards as a great solution to gift giving for Seniors.  The giver and the receiver will be pleased.  Know the conditions and stipulations of cards we buy. The advice from Daily Business News is to use them sooner than later.

Panda Lady suggests Amazon Gift cards for all your senior friends on line.

Do you like gift cards for giving? How would you spend a gift card?

Seniors Can find Success with Real On Line Business Ventures

We Seniors see so many opportunities thrown our way with big promises of additional income. Most are business ventures who scam us out of our meager monthly allotment. I have seen and witnessed my share of programs that promise no work, no investment, no advertising as the site owner does it all for you. I have seen and been part of ventures that disappear over night taking our money with them.  Products that look good, may not be what was promised when we purchased on line.

That is not to say that all programs are taking advantage of us.  So once a week Panda will Pick someone she knows who is successful on the internet or a recommended product that fulfills it claims.

Over the past 3  years I have had a casual internet relationship with a lady by the name of Barb Doyle.  She would occasionally  respond to forum threads which I had posted.  Barb is a quiet marketer not really spending much time in the social community called Adlandpro.  Her posts were content rich showing that she was a lady who did not post on a whim, but posted to forum threads that had meaning to her and her business. She is not as concerned with being seen but being seen in the right places.

Meet Barb Doyle

I believe that having a "first day/last day" way of thinking is important.
All the glory goes to God.

Barb lives near St. Louis, Missouri with her husband.  She was born in Alaska as her father was in the military, stationed in the far north state.  When I asked about her on line involvement she responded: (more…)

On Line Jobs for Seniors

As late summer days approached, the smell of ripe tomatoes in our garden permeated the air.  The older ladies of the neighborhood would often stop and discuss the opening of the tomato factory.  “When would it open?”, “What was the crop looking like?”,” Are you working at the tomato factory this year?’ were the questions most often posed to each other.

One could  hear the rustle of stiff rubber aprons hitting against the black rubber boots as the ladies passed on the alley behind our house.  The long awaited day had arrived.  The tomato factory had opened.  It really was not a factory but what we would now call a processing plant.  In the little town of Pandora, Ohio the opening of the tomato factory was anticipated as it would provide income for some senior citizens at the factory and immigrant or seasonal laborers picking tomatos. It was short term work of only a few weeks.

When I was a child I witnessed my older sister and my mother as well as some neighborhood widows take this as  part time employment.  Because I was home alone and some times sought my mothers permission to play with friends or go swimming with another family, I would stop in at the tomato factory.

It always smelled of over ripe tomatos, close to rotting, and tomatoes cooking in the hot water gave the aroma I well remember. The sounds of cans clanging overhead as they traveled from outside the building to the end of the peeling line are vivid memories. There wasn’t much chatter among the ladies who stood along a conveyer belt concentrating on their task of peeling tomatoes. They had to make their money in just a few short weeks, so each hour of concentrated work was precious. After all they were getting a dollar for each galvanized bucket they filled. A card pinned to their back was to be punched by the ‘runner’ for each bucket filled.

The process was simple, men outside the building dumped hamsters of tomatoes into tubs of hot water. A conveyor belt pulled the tomatoes into the building where the ladies stood on the peeling line.  The first ladies took the biggest tomatoes, gave a slight squeeze to remove the skin and quickly removed the core with their special tomato knife.  As the tomatoes progressed down the line the less desirable tomatoes took a little more work to remove the skins and possibly cut some of the hard parts around the core. By the end of the line, the poorest tomatoes were available, and fewer tomatoes were processed.  Each hour the ladies shifted  positions so  that all had equal opportunity to the best tomatoes.  The canning of the tomatoes was the last part of the process.

I never got to work in the the tomato factory, wearing the stiff rubber aprons and stiff black rubber boots and coming home with withered skin on the hands. The factory was closed and moved to modern facilities where people wore sanitary suits, masks and processed tomatoes in sanitized  well controlled environments. Now the tomatoes are picked by giant machines which make one trip through the fields to tear up the plants at the height of ripening period.  The little town of Pandora, Ohio no longer provides this seasonal work for Seniors seeking part time work.

This story reminds us that opportunities for Seniors to work on line processing seasonal foods has disappeared.  Many jobs have moved overseas where labor costs are less.  As retirees we look for opportunities to find part-time or short term work to supplement our income.  The internet provides us such opportunity.  Even if we are physically challenged using our computer to generate income is a viable way to have some short term or seasonal work.

I am thankful I don’t have to rise early and go to work in a damp wet place like a tomato factory but rather work on line in the comfort of my home, choose my own hours, choose the type of work I wish to pursue.  I have mentors and friends not from a neighborhood but from the entire world of internet users. It can be seasonal or short-term or even at my age I can make it a career.  Here’s to on line work for Seniors.

Panda Picked this  story to remind us that as times change, we Seniors can adapt to new ways of making money. We can use the computer to find us work, applying on line for local jobs, create our own on line business, or train ourselves for services to provide on line. The possibilities are endless!

What is your online venture using the internet and all its possibilites?
